Designing
landscapes is a great way to make a
living. The work is varied, interesting, and re-
warding. It doesn't exist in a theoretical world of
artistic abstractions; it begins and ends with a
client. At Van Zelst, Inc., satisfying the design
needs of the client is our first priority. When I founded
Van Zelst, Inc. as a landscape design/build firm in 1979,
I knew that it offered me a life I would enjoy. What I could
not then envision was how rewarding it would be to work with
clients and provide for their landscaping needs. Year after
year, we at Van Zelst, Inc. have been designing, installing,
and maintaining beauti-ful landscapes where clients raise
their children, entertain friends and build their private
histories.
Client
satisfaction is based upon the quality of
our work and services provided. In whatever we do, my staff
and I emphasize quality craftsmanship and quality materials,
both in hardscape and plants. Regarding plants, for example,
we now grow 90% of the perennials we use because this is the
best way to ensure that they are well-developed and healthy.
We also grow selected trees and shrubs.

Our
headquarters in Wadsworth, Illinois, is not a typical
corporate complex. Along with the usual equipment
facilities plus the 60 polyhouses where we grow perennials,
we have a design studio where our landscape architects
and support staff work.
Intentionally
styled as a gabled American home, the studio building
offers clients a means of seeing how a wide variety
of plants appear in a home-like setting. The surrounding
landscape typifies our varied capabilities.
