A Small Project Blooms into Greater Possibilities

Northbrook, Illinois

What began as a simple planting project a few years ago has grown into an extensive engagement as this home’s owners began to imagine the possibilities for their landscape.

The wooded property presented a tremendous opportunity to illustrate how shady areas can come to life with an interesting mix of plant types. The trees were underplanted with astilbe, hostas, ferns, hydrangeas, heuchera, vinca and other shade-friendly perennials that add color and texture to the environment.

Hardscape additions included a new driveway edged with tumbled concrete pavers, extending a seatwall to encompass a new mini-pool and fountain, an elegant Jerusalem limestone patio and more, with some of the stonework finished to match the aged look of the existing stonework.

Extensive drainage work was also performed to divert water away from low-lying areas in the rear of the property, near a natural pond.

Next up, an outdoor shower and spa will add to the livability of the outdoor spaces.
