We work
as a team. Each design is the result of a collaborative effort
among the landscape archi-tects and other specialists. Our
methodology is termed "design/build," which means
that one landscape architect serves as team leader and supervises
the entire design, construction and installation process.
When many different sub-contractors are working together on
a complex installation, it is simpler and less confusing for
everyone, including the client, to have one person responsible
for all aspects of the work.
Installation
of a new landscape often begins with extensive excavation
and earth removal. There are occasional surprises. Once we
found a car. Another time we uncovered a group of 12,000-year-old
mastodon bones and tusks in a marsh at the headquarters site.
"If it's buried, we'll find it," is our in-house
joke.

A
landscape is not finished the minute we complete
installation. Landscapes and gardens need time to mature.
Often two or three years pass before a project
fully achieves the look that the design team intended.
Hence, we stress the importence of good maintenance.
A landscape that is not expertly maintained will deteriorate
and be a disappointment. At Van Zelst, Inc., quality
design, quality service, installation and quality maintenance
are the bedrock of the company philosophy.
